On marketing and Ipod in Japan

Japan has one of the most advanced (if not the most advanced) mobile-educated people of the world. Usually, mobile devices we see in use in Japan today, are spread around the globe after 1 or 2 year. I mean, they are in the front line when we talk about mobile technology usage. Even though, guys over there are forming lines to buy the new Iphone 2.0. What??? How can it be?? It doesn't even have a card slot expansion! No radio. Still no office (or whatever) docs editor. So, I don't see how, well-educated-on-mobile-devices Japanese people are keen on making clues to get the latest Iphone.
One explanation: power of Branding. Branding is everything nowadays. It is amazing how it plays with peoples' perception. A guy interviewed said it was there just because it was the iphone, the phone from apple, so it was cool, modern and unconventional.
Well, that sounds ok to me. After all, what matters today other than making statements?
If you are not able to make a statement about policy or free global market maybe you can make a statement about which mobile or notebook phone is cooler than all others.
By the way, I prefer Nokia.
